Part 1 of this series really involves using your common sense.
You get what you pay for. Although there are some really good value treadmills out there please be wary of the “best treadmill around for the cheapest price”
I recently spoke to a gym owner who had been promised a lifetime warrantee on all moving parts by an unscrupulous equipment vendor.
The chances of the frame lasting more than 7 years are very remote, especially in a gym environment. When it was time to send the motor in for repairs the treadmill stood for 6 weeks and the gym owner had to pay for the technician to take out the unit and send it to a city far away from his gym

At gym4me.com we have linked up with the most reputable and reliable brands in the country and can offer you the best VALUE deals.
Ten things to consider when buying a treadmill
1. Forget the second hand good deal route. Do not buy a second hand treadmill… ever.
2. Look online at a reputable vendor. There are a few exceptional online vendors that I have used in South Africa and I will send you their details if you want them. Contact me
3. Be wary of Saturday morning specials at the local hyper market. Many home units at shops are impulse purchases and are geared around that fact. I.e. they look flashy on the outside and are designed to go at the cheapest rate possible.
4. Ask for advice from an independent fitness expert before deciding on only one item of equipment. Gym4me.com also offers free advice. A treadmill may not be the piece of equipment that you are really needing.
5. Ask the vendor for advice. The reputable companies have owners who are experienced in the fitness game and can give solid advice. If you are not happy with the advice or want more advice call me,
6. Ask how long the brand has been in the country. Is it an ongoing supply? Or was it part of a once off container that a part time supplier is palming off.
7. Deal with a company that does this full time, somebody with a business to build up and who cares about your customer satisfaction. There are some really good gym equipment suppliers in South Africa. Contact me and I will send you their details.
8. Have you budgeted properly? R12 000 is about the cut off point for a good quality home treadmill. R5000 and I am sorry, what sort of car will you get for R5000? Need I say more?
9. Remember that exercise is a lifestyle choice. This is not a monthly purchase it is a product which if maintained will look after your fitness for five years or more. R12 000 over 5 years is R2400 per year, that is R200 per month, cheaper than a gym membership. Don’t be “pennywise and pound foolish”.
10. Don’t buy second hand treadmills. Didn’t you read this the first time I wrote it? Of course its a good deal! Now look for spares. “Ooopsey, we don’t make that model anymore there are no spares”. The country’s gyms are littered with units which were brought in to the country on a once off basis. No back up, no spares, no service. Buyer beware of “five star deals”
11. I know I said ten things but this is important. DONT get fooled by big motor statistics. HP, (Horse Power) must be “Continuous Duty” not the often quoted “Peak Horse Power”. Compare apples with apples
So the next time your gym owner tells you that it’s an expensive business maintaining the equipment on low monthly gym fees, please believe him.
Happy hunting and call me for advice or for a list of REPUTABLE South African Vendors
